Root Canal
Root canals are an endodontic treatment that is needed when the soft tissue (also known as pulp), inside the tooth’s root canal becomes inflamed or infected. This treatment can restore the health and function of the tooth. Root canal therapy is performed to prevent the need for dental implants or bridges. If left untreated, symptoms may worsen and may lead to abscesses. Root canals can aesthetically enhance the smile with a natural look and feel.
Candidates for Root Canal Therapy May
Suffer from a traumatic accident injuring the tooth, causing pulp damage
Deal with chronic irritation because of deep decay or other dental infections
Have severe gum disease
Experience toothaches
Suffer from sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
Each patient will meet with one of our dentists for a consultation. During this appointment, the dentist will perform a meticulous oral exam and any other necessary testing to diagnose the symptoms presented. If a root canal is needed, the patient will meet with our endodontist, Dr. Mehran Yazdi, for further evaluation. Dr. Yazdi will meet with the patient to assess their candidacy for root canal therapy with further exams and tests. He will develop a customized treatment plan detailing all procedural and recovery details. Dr. Yazdi will spend time with the patient answering any questions or concerns they may have about the procedure.
Root Canal Procedure
Root canal therapy may require one to three appointments depending on the severity of the patient’s condition. Patients may be placed under local anesthesia to minimize discomfort during this non-surgical procedure. During the treatment, Dr. Yazdi will remove the damaged pulp. He will then thoroughly clean and seal the inside of the tooth. If the damage is severe, the dentist may recommend a crown or filling to further preserve the tooth.
The dentist may prescribe medication to relieve discomfort following the root canal. Dr. Yazdi will schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor the patient’s recovery process. Patients may experience slight sensitivity following the procedure. The tooth may feel relatively different from the other teeth as it settles into place.
